In Defense of Video Games

In Defense of Video Games
I'm really not sure what to say about the brevity of this article. I suppose I'm fatigued, but let's not dwell on that and jump right into day 5.
Video games have played a relatively significant role in my life, with consoles, PCs, and everything in between being a part of it. I remain cautious about the potential negative effects of gaming and don't spend 12 hours a day playing like some of my friends. In fact, I wrote my year-end speech in fourth grade about the benefits of video games. Trust me, playing a game like Human: Fall Flat won't turn me into an aggressive person.
A speech I wrote in the fifth grade. I still think life skills being a course should be a thing for students. A little random but still kind of relevant to the topic above.
Why Life Skills Should Be an Optional School Subject
Countless adults in the modern world suffer from a lack of essential day-to-day skills. Millions of adults are in credit card debt or they became bankrupt because they don’t know how to manage money properly. This is one of the reasons why I want Life Skills to be an optional school subject for students to take in elementary and high school. If the current youth is truly the future population, then they should know some fundamental skills. For example, imagine if there was a sudden power outage and nobody knew what to do. Everybody would panic and there would be a disaster. Some of these situations could be averted if the people in these situations were educated. A prepared person would keep a calm head and find a flashlight or a candle and they would contact the right people to fix the power emergency. In the Life Skills course, you learn to keep a cool head for very modern issues.
I bet that many people in this class can’t even make a sandwich or a small meal. If you pack your own lunch for school, that could one day come in handy for your college or work life. Life Skills class would teach you how to cook a meal with limited ingredients, kitchen tricks, how to organize a lunch box, and even help you meal plan. Additionally having good manners and etiquette might just get you a job one day. In Life Skills class you would learn to make small talk with complete strangers or have to collaborate with people you don’t like. In the Life Skills class, you would learn to roleplay a scenario with someone you don’t like, as an example. Speaking of joining the workforce, you must write a good resume in order to get a job. Many adults these days scour the internet for a good resume template. That is hours upon hours that could be used much more productively on work or projects. Another dominant inconvenience for adults is not knowing essential hygiene. In the Life Skills class, you would learn to be hygienic by learning how to properly clean a toilet or cleaning a messy oven which would teach you to live in a healthy, sustainable environment. Overall these skills if learned can help you out when you’re older.
Usually, people can become very over-eager after college or even during college and impulsively make terrible financial decisions. One example of this is people buying pets prematurely. In many cases, people don’t realize that they need time and money to take care of a pet. Imagine if your dog gets sick, and you have to take it to the vet for $1000 that you don’t have. Life Skills class would teach you how to invest in things in the future and prioritize your needs. Another skill people should learn is to D.I.Y. or Do It Yourself. Trust me, this will save you a lot of money, and you may even be able to afford that humongous vet bill.
Money is not the root of all evil, but the basis of your status in the world. That is why you should save money and not waste it. In Life Skills class you will learn when you’re at a store, expensive isn’t always better and a credit card isn’t free money. As kids, many of us probably think that credit cards have infinite money, but that is far from the truth. Credit cards have a limit that you have to pay back afterward. In truth, the most important thing is money management. If we don't learn this, many people in the future may become broke and homeless due to not learning how valuable money actually is. When we’re adults we have to pay insurance, taxes, mortgage, and loans. Learning to manage your money is essential to your adulthood. This is why we need the Life Skills class for our education system.
In conclusion, I restate my argument that the Life Skills class should be an optional subject for elementary and high school students to take. Kids should have fun playing sports and video games while learning stuff that will be necessary for the next 70 short years of our time on earth. This is why we need Life Skills So if we are truly the future generation, then we should immediately start learning even a little about adulthood.
I strongly dislike politicians who use the gaming industry as a scapegoat. It's important to enjoy video games for what they are - a form of entertainment - without letting them take over your life. And just for fun, "In Defense" is my favourite title opener.
