Day 8:
The Virtual School Dilemma

The Virtual School Dilemma
With the COVID-19 pandemic, many governments had to make the difficult decision to allow the option of an online alternative. For many, it is a mostly synchronous school that mimics its in-person counterpart using technology.
I decided to choose the virtual school. I thought that it would be an experience to try virtual school (and also the whole pandemic situation). I have my regrets but overall liked it. Yet, I would never do it again for another year if I had the option.
I got a friend of mine to guest write for this day 8. Let's just say he has the same initials of the old, dead meme Okay [Old Generation]. I have not changed a single word.
Problems of Virtual School
"From previous surveys on mental health during virtual school, 22% of the responses show that the kids that had access to mental health care now do not and 32% show their mental health problems increased. The virtual school allows us to have online classes and lessons in the form of meetings. We also have countless resources, different materials and assignments helping us become successful. We are in this dilemma of Virtual school instead of in-person school because of the global spread virus of COVID-19. This disastrous disease made many families decide on sending their kids online to help COVID-19 to stay out of their homes and shield their kids from others that might be carrying the virus. Although Virtual school is the main source of education in COVID-19, it does have negative impacts such as adapting to the environment, technical difficulties and mental health.
Many children in the period of virtual school are suffering because of their environment. Lots of homes are abusive and/or crowded, and some children may not be receiving the attention they need. According to EdSource, “More than half the students who responded to the survey said they need mental health support since the school closures began in mid-March. That includes 22% who said they were receiving some kind of support before the closures but now have limited or no access to those services and an additional 32% who said their mental health needs have arisen since schools closed”. This data shows that many people during virtual school mental health issues are rapidly increasing, and around 54% are either receiving a small amount of help or no help. Even though this problem occurs as an urgent matter it is not the only problem that shows up in virtual school.

Technical difficulties seem like a simple fixed issue, but it’s more complex than that. Many families are staying home because of the pandemic, therefore they are all trying to access the internet making it hard for the internet to keep up. Multiple people trying to access the internet at once could be a problem, but that’s not the only problem occurring there are lots of WIFI-rotors with different challenges and difficulties, thus the only solution is to purchase a new rotor for greater connection. This shows that lots of homes might need to purchase a rotor, but lots of homes are having financial issues leading us to another difficulty. Technical difficulties come into two forms, because of the pandemic lots of families and family members are home trying to access the internet spreading bad connections to the rest of the house. There also might be a bad connection from the rotor itself. Therefore, families might have to purchase a rotor, but for some families that could be a difficulty.
Mental health is a very crucial part of a person's well-being. With that being said in multiple ways virtual school defines mental well-being. Students gain anxiety from the presentation and its new form, while it seems odd many students do not have the confidence to turn on their cameras or feel uncomfortable while it's on. The virtual school also might make students uncomfortable with their surroundings because it might come off as small, messy, or not what they see in other students' surroundings making them feel different. When people feel different most people see it in a negative way making them frustrated or nervous. In conclusion, students feel uncomfortable with their surroundings or virtual school platform and new systems. Even though in-person school during the pandemic has its risks, the virtual school also contains risks such as adapting to the environment, technical difficulties and mental health. To restate what has been stated during virtual school people have had a hard time adapting to the environment and studies show that many students now don’t have access to mental health care or limited access, Technical difficulties seem a simply fixed problem, but might go deeper than that and mental health such as anxiety can increase from the new systems and platform of virtual school.

The influx of virtual school users has created an incredibly competitive market with a battle-royale vibe coming out of it. Google Meets, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Skype, Discord, etc... have all risen to popularity (maybe not that last one for education purposes). It's interesting to see which software will rise next and which will fall.
